Powell Gardens

Over Labor Day weekend, our family went to Powell Gardens to see the Lego brick sculptures throughout the park.  We started inside at the Lego room where the kids got to play a bit with some Legos.

Nolan cracked me up....he got these new sunglasses and didn't want to take them off.  Even inside!
We had a fun time walking through the gardens and seeing the plants, water features and of course Legos!  There was a sort of Lego scavenger hunt that kept the kids excited about touring the garden.  They really wanted to find all the Lego sculptures and they were pretty well scattered throughout Powell Gardens.
We started in the Heartland Harvest Garden which has fruits, vegetables and herbs planted in organized and beautiful patterns.  This water feature was nice and cool on a warm day There were also grapes and vines which the kids enjoyed running through.

Maya spent some times with me while Darin and Nolan walked through some of the gardens.
She makes such a beautiful model!
We were on our way to the silo which has a beautiful overview of the garden.
We made it to the top of the silo and saw the quilt pattern that the herbs were planted in as well as a beautiful view of the rest of the garden. After that we headed out to a playground and looked for the Lego sculptures on our scavenger hunt!
One of the things I wanted to do while we were visiting was to take pictures of the plaques recognizing my Gran and Grandad that are throughout Powell Gardens.  Near the barrel fountain in the grape area is this plaque recognizing Grandad's donation of pines and junipers.
At the entrance of the Conifer Reference Garden is this plaque...

It says, "The Conifer Garden acquired through the generosity of Marvin Snyder is dedicated in memory of Emelie Snyder."
And, of course, my favorite, "These potagers are dedicated to Emelie Kirk Snyder 1926-2005.  She nourished body and soul of family and friends with her love of nature and her culinary skill."  This last plaque is in the potager garden near the entrance of the Heartland Harvest Garden.
And to end on a high note, this fox Lego sculpture was voted by Maya and Nolan as the best one in the garden.  He is stalking a gray rabbit.  Hip hip hooray we finished the scavenger hunt!!
